Dan Harrington came to EcoTimber in 2001 with backgrounds in construction and forest conservation activism. After earning a degree in international environmental policy and traveling extensively abroad, Dan had come to believe that traditional conservation efforts were not getting results fast enough to stem the tide of deforestation, particularly in the Amazon. He saw that the most effective means of keeping tropical forests from being cleared for agriculture is to give them an economic value. This realization drew him to EcoTimber, a company focused on using market forces to promote sustainable forest management.

On behalf of EcoTimber, Dan has traveled throughout the world visiting sustainable forestry operations and wood products factories. He has also worked closely with environmental groups and officials from various green building programs across the U.S., helping develop policies that promote the use of genuinely sustainable forest products. Dan sits on the U.S. Green Building Council's Technical Advisory Group for Certified Wood, which advises USGBC decision-makers on issues surrounding forest certification. Dan is also a wood flooring technical expert, and has authored articles on the subject for mainstream construction publications.

Dan is fluent in Spanish and in his spare time enjoys volunteering (both here and abroad), surfing, snowboarding, photography, and chasing his son Teo.
